HOW TO: Fight Acne at the Root - 5 Causes & Steps to Rid Acne

The menstrual cycle, producing fluctuating estrogen levels also contributes to cyclical breakouts. There will be times in our lives when the body goes through change. During these trying times, the more water (with a little lemon and Himalayan pink salt added) will really help your body get through the tough times. Making sure your body is hydrated will help the body processes operate more smoothly. How smooth does your car engine run without oil and water? Remember you must drastically reduce sugar/sweet and refined carbohydrate consumption to reduce insulin production thus reducing hormone levels. You could also do intermittent fasting (learn how here) to reduce the production of insulin.   Stress and Chronic Stress This will cause chin and jawline acne—especially in adults. This is often due to hormonal shifts and imbalances. Hormones stimulate oil production, which leads to an increase of bacteria trapped in the pores. This results in a sore, painful pustule or cystic blemish. There are going to be stressful times in our lives. To cut out the processed carbohydrates and sugary foods (including pasta, rice, and bread) during these times especially, will greatly decrease the pressure on your body’s system. It will also help you think clearly. Extra sleep and finding ways to de-stress like walking around the block are extremely important during these times. Insulin Insulin is one of the body’s master hormones, and high levels of insulin aggravate acne. Insulin stimulates oil glands. Insulin is produced by the pancreas every time we eat, but more insulin is produced when we eat foods high in sugar and refined carbohydrates (known as high-glycemic foods). When a lot of high-glycemic foods are consumed, insulin levels in the bloodstream go up, stimulating oil production. When our blood glucose levels go up we must help the body by drinking more water to help flush out the extra glucose or our body will try to deal with it within the body internally. This high blood glucose will test as diabetic symptoms if you go to the doctor. Diabetes means excessive urination! Why is your body trying to urinate so much?? It is trying to get rid of extra glucose and other toxic byproducts not needed by the body. If you are dehydrated the body is taking the fluid needed from other areas in your body to try and excrete those toxins. This increases the chance of other complications as well as increases your blood pressure in addition to the skin problems that arise. Once again using our vehicles as an example, how fast does your car heat up when it is running low on water and fluids? This leads to added pressure on the engine, valves, and hoses just like the added pressure on our heart, organs, and arteries in our bodies. We really must be drinking enough water with a little bit of Himalayan pink salt for the minerals and lemon. Insulin-like growth factor (IGF-1) has a stimulatory effect on oil glands and also leads to elevations in testosterone and androstenedione, which in turn can stimulate oil production also. For example, many whey-protein shakes boasting high amounts of IGF-1, these can contribute to acne also. Unhealthy Gut This is another root cause. Multiple factors can erode gut health, including, alcohol consumptions, soda/diet soda, food sensitivities, imbalanced gut flora, insufficient production of digestive enzymes, and regular consumption of inflammatory foods such as sugar, processed meals, junk food, fast food, breads, highly refined oils, trans fat (hydrogenated oil/fat). These can lead to the damaged or leaky gut, lack of intestinal microbes, poor nutrient absorption, and inflammation. Taking antibiotics, prescription and over the counter medications also kill many gut bacteria and it takes a long time (months) and lots of dietary efforts (such as eating lots of probiotic-rich foods daily and eating an anti-inflammatory diet) to nurture these gut microbes back to healthy levels. With today’s pollution and unhealthy food choices we almost have to supplement our gut biome with fermented foods (raw milk kefir, unsweetened yogurts, fermented vegetables like kimchee, sauerkraut etc) eating lots of raw foods will help balance your gut (prebiotic fibers) where most of your immune system resides and many important body processes are carried out. Compromised Detoxification Pathways Add this to the above mix, and you have a recipe for skin problems. The liver is the body’s main organ of detoxification. First phase toxins (including used-up hormones) are shuttled to the liver to be broken down. Next, the liver sends these broken-down toxins back out into the body to be eliminated. Elimination then happens in one of three ways: through sweat, urine, and the bowels. You can optimize the detox process at every step of the way. Eating cruciferous vegetables (the broccoli and cauliflower family, for example) is one of the best ways to support liver function; regular exercise or sweat therapies (like an infrared sauna); staying hydrated keeps the bladder moving, and a high-fiber diet does the same for the bowels. If you have poor digestion and detoxification, it will show on your skin. The number one cause is lack of daily water consumption. Often soda, diet soda, processed juice, tea, and coffee are used to quench thirst instead of just water or fresh lemon water. Ideally, we need half our body weight in ounces of water daily to properly cleanse and help flush out toxins and waste in the body. If we don’t drink enough water, these toxins build up INSIDE the body and produce unintended consequences. They have to go somewhere? They will show up as symptoms of imbalance in and on your body such as diabetes, high blood pressure, acne, eczema, and others. Remember, you can die in 4 weeks without food but only 4 days without any water. Which one is more important to the body? People forget to simply drink water as they go about their day dealing with life and work. Skin out of Balance This means your skin is more prone to chronic acne. The skin’s natural and optimal pH should be 4.5 to 5.5 and the integrity of your skin can be compromised when harsh over the counter anti-acne products (or prescription steroids, etc, etc,) are used on a regular basis. They dry out the skin which causes the sebum gland to become overactive to compensate for the dryness, this, in turn, causes oily clogged pores that leads to acne. Common prescription-strength acne treatments are topical and oral antibiotics, harsh clinical procedures like dermabrasion and acid peels. When used these strong antibiotics kill bad bacteria along with good bacteria in the gut and on the skin’s microbiome (learn here) (your skin is filled with bacteria doing their job just like the gut).
